PIGGYBACK SPREADERS FOR CONTAINER AND TRAILER HANDLING
RAPID SWITCHING BETWEEN CONTAINERS AND TRAILERS
In an intermodal terminal, it is important that you can quickly switch between handling containers and trailers. Therefore, we have designed a spreader with four piggyback arms, which you can retract within the dimensions of the spreader for ‘stacking’. It is also possible to place containers and trailers in a ship cell.
A SPREADER YOU CAN RELY ON
When working in a smaller terminal, the likelihood is high that you don't have equipment to take over the work in case of failures, maintenance, or repairs to your machines. It is therefore essential that your machines are reliable.
We have taken this into account in the design of our piggyback spreaders. We use as little electronic and mechanical rotating components as possible. This reduces the risk of downtime and allows you to rely on the availability of your spreader.

When working in a smaller terminal, there is a high chance that you do not have equipment capable of taking over the work in case of failures, maintenance, or repairs to your machines. Therefore, it is essential that your machines are reliable.

24/7 AVAILABILITY THANKS TO DOUBLE MOTOR AND PUMP SYSTEM
When you use your spreader intensively and under heavy conditions, there is always a chance that something will break. To prevent total downtime, our spreaders are equipped with a double motor and pump system. This clever hydraulic design ensures that if one of the two systems fails, the other system continues to operate. And so does your spreader.

TAILOR-MADE PIGGYBACK SPREADERS
At VDL Container Systems, we customize the design of your spreader to suit your preferences and (RMG / RTG) crane. We supply spreaders for 20 and 40 ft containers, but with our telescopic system, you can also handle containers up to 45 ft.
HYBRID PIGGYBACK SPREADERS
Do you mainly work with containers? Then a (partially) electric piggyback spreader is a smart choice. In this hybrid version, only the piggyback arms are hydraulically powered. All other functions are fully electric. Our hybrid piggyback spreaders require less maintenance than hydraulic spreaders, are more energy-efficient, quieter, and better for the environment because they use little to no oil.
PIGGYBACK ATTACHMENT
Is a piggyback rarely needed? Then opt for just a piggyback extension. This can be operated after installation over 20 ft by any standard spreader. The arms are not foldable. This makes the frame simple and therefore cost-effective.
Modular features
Mechanically connected piggyback arms
This option is interesting for rail terminals where piggyback operations mainly take place and ‘stacking’ is not (often) required. The mechanical connection between the piggyback arms makes the spreader simpler and therefore more robust and better suited for continuous piggyback use.
Rotation and center of gravity adjustment
Can't the crane where you hang the spreader rotate? Then the spreader needs to do it to load the container onto the truck correctly. This is possible when you choose our rotation function. It may be that the weight in the container is unevenly distributed. To prevent this from posing a hazard, you can move the center of gravity with the centroid adjustment.
Damping system
All four twistlocks used to attach the container to the spreader can move individually 10 centimeters up and down. This helps to absorb shocks and noise.
Camera
Need better visibility during container handling? We can install a camera on your spreader that captures everything in close-up, crystal clear.
Weighing system
By adding a weighing system to your piggyback spreader, you know exactly how much your container or trailer weighs.
Height detection
With our height detection, your crane automatically receives a signal when the spreader approaches the container. This allows you to approach the container more slowly, minimizing the risk of damage and accidents.
Capacity increase or decrease
Do you process your containers or trailers with a weight lower than your maximum capacity? Then we can also design lighter spreaders for you. Need a system that can carry more weight? No problem.
Automatic lubrication system
The twistlocks used to pick up and rotate the containers and trailers need to be lubricated from time to time. Our automatic lubrication system counts how many times they rotate and lubricates them completely automatically after a certain number of rotations. This ensures they continue to operate smoothly.
